History of County Galway<\/h2>\n

Dating back over 7000 years,\u00a0County Galway\u00a0<\/strong>is a prominent feature in Ireland\u2019s rich history.<\/p>\n

The city of\u00a0Galway\u00a0<\/strong>was founded in the 12th century. That was due to its fishing potential around the rich Irish waters.<\/p>\n

By the 13th century, they built defensive walls around the city, which helped prevent ongoing raids from the local clans.<\/p>\n

Things started to change in 1396. Richard II passed on the governance of the town to fourteen merchant families. So, \u201cThe City of Tribes\u201d\u00a0<\/em>was born.<\/p>\n

From there, the city continued to grow to make use of the surrounding lands for farming. That led to many of the local towns in Galway and villages.<\/p>\n

But, it wasn\u2019t until 1569 the region officially became\u00a0County Galway.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the formation of\u00a0County Galway,<\/strong>\u00a0the region has seen many ups and downs. But it is these hardships that have helped to strengthen one of Ireland\u2019s 26 counties.<\/p>\n

With the claim to Ireland\u2019s best-preserved medieval town,\u00a0Athenry<\/strong>\u00a0is full of history.<\/p>\n

Here you can see\u00a0Athenry Castle\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Dominican Abbey.\u00a0<\/strong>Plus, this\u00a0Galway<\/strong>\u00a0town still has over 70% of the medieval town walls. Ideal for a day of discovery with the kids.<\/p>\n

As well as the historical value,\u00a0Athenry\u00a0<\/strong>has a variety of\u00a0traditional pubs<\/a>\u00a0and cafes to enjoy.<\/p>\n

The town is 25 kilometres east of\u00a0Galway City<\/strong>. Perfect for a day trip to enjoy the Norman Ruins.<\/p>\n

Over recent years,\u00a0Barna\u00a0<\/strong>has grown a reputation for high-quality restaurants. Being on the coast, the choice of fresh seafood is fantastic.<\/p>\n

West Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> is ideal if you want a unique tasting menu that changes every day. Or head over to\u00a0Donnelly’s of Barna<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to enjoy an indulgent seafood chowder.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re not busy eating at these charming restaurants, the\u00a0Barna\u00a0<\/strong>landscape is a scenic wonderland.<\/p>\n

Head into the mountains to enjoy the views over the bay. Or, cast a line out on a local fishing charter to reel in your own catch of the day.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, the town is more of a commuter town for\u00a0Galway.\u00a0<\/strong>But many of the historical ruins remain.<\/p>\n

Now,\u00a0Connemara<\/strong><\/a> isn\u2019t strictly a town. However, it is a must-visit destination in\u00a0County Galway.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is so much natural beauty on display with the inclusion of the\u00a012 Bens Mountain Range.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From here, you can discover bogs, heaths, and woodlands, an ideal way to see the county’s natural landscape.<\/p>\n

Throughout the years of the Great Famine,\u00a0Spiddal\u00a0<\/strong>was a base for many hospitals. The name\u00a0Spiddal\u00a0<\/strong>comes from\u00a0ospideal\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0hospital.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Nowadays,\u00a0Spiddal\u00a0<\/strong>is a bustling craft village. That can be seen with the many shops in the area.\u00a0Spiddal Craft & Design Studios, Glass Craft\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Standun\u00a0<\/strong>are there if you need to find the perfect gift for any craft lovers.<\/p>\n
