When you finally arrive in Castletownbere you feel you have found a new unique land right out of a novel! A little fishing village nestled in the fabulous Beara Penninsula, at the foot of the Caha Mountains but also part of the Wild Atlantic Way, Castletownbere is indeed a bustling little town of under 1000 inhabitants. An artists dream and haven to writers and craft makers. Every Thursday in the Summer there is market selling these crafts. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants and if you have read Pete McCarthy’s book, McCarthy’s Bar (1998) the bar in the square in Castletownbere is on the front cover of the book! Miskish is a detached cottage 3 miles outside Castletownbere, perfect for a family or group of friends. When you walk in to the house there is a bathroom with wet room shower, a good sized kitchen diner and a cosy sitting room with stove for you to relax in after a long day exploring. Off the living room there is a lovely bright conservatory, a wonderful spot for breakfast and lunch. The main double bedroom is downstairs and is large. It is through this room that there is a door to the upstairs which has another double bedroom, a bathroom and a 3rd bedroom that has 3 single beds. It is a comfortable, homely and spacious cottage, perfect for a family. Outside is a patio area and outdoor table for you to enjoy alfresco dining! The owners of Miskish are also able to offer you special rates in the nearby Lios Lara Rising Stables. So if you are a seasoned rider or just a beginner there is something for both adults and children at Lios Lara, take some lessons or join the one of the camps. Castletownbere is the largest white fishing port in Ireland and fresh fish is available to buy and cooked beautifully in all the local restaurants to delight your palate. There is always something to do – cycling, walking, fishing, hill walking, golf, sailing or horse riding. It is on the Beara Way walking and cycling trail and also the bridal path. While you are there why visit the Stone Circle and Ring Fort or take a boat trip to Bear Island. Look for the amazing beaches and take a trip out of Castletownbere and enjoy the beautiful popular village of Glengarriff or head 35km to Kerry and visit Kenmare. With its unspoilt and breath-taking scenery and with so much to do, Castletownbere will be a holiday you won’t forget!
