“We booked the Brook Lane Cottage for a 3-night stay in April, 2023.”

Upon arrival, there was a distinct and unpleasant odor. Prior to our arrival, the host attempted to mitigate the odor with air freshener, but this did not help. We made the host aware of our concerns, but she insisted there was no odor beyond that of the air freshener; clearly there was. We were unable to stay due to the odor. Sykes Cottages refused to compensate us in any way, stating that we did not bring the problem to the host's attention in a timely manner to allow them to rectify the problem. In fact, we notified the host within two hours of arrival after opening windows to try and air out the space; this did not eliminate the odor. The host refused to acknowledge that there was a problem and offered no abatement solution other than the air fresheners which did not help. We never unpacked our bags but were charged for the entire stay. While additional concerns with the property were not the reason for our departure, it should be noted that the property does not measure up to its description on line. It is quite dated and in need of upgrading. The yard is not well maintained. The laundry facilities are in an old, dirty shed in the back of the house. There is a boarded up window where it appears someone may have broken in at some point. We have traveled extensively and have stayed in a wide variety of accommodations; this one was the most disappointing. This is the first negative review I have ever written but felt it was necessary.

Thank you for your review. We just have a few comments ourselves to make as we feel this review is a bit harsh especially when we are so transparent in our photos and description of the property. The exterior and interior of the property are exactly as our photos show. When you arrived at the property you were shown around to every room and all appliances were explained to you. This property has been recently renovated to the highest standard and you were informed it was painted freshly three weeks before your arrival. There is a floral plug in air freshener in the sitting room which was explained to you could be plugged out if you were allergic to scents. I can not understand how you say the property does not measure up to the description on line as it is exactly as shown on line. The laundry facilities are located in a garage with a securely locked door for safety reasons which is kept clean and tidy at all times. The boarded up window you refer to is the front garage which is not accessible to guests and is blocked off for this reason. You arrived at this property at 3.30pm and spent 10 to 15 minutes discussing the area with the host and places to eat. At no stage during this introduction did you mention an odour. You contacted the host at 7.45pm saying you had checked out and had booked a hotel in a nearby town, this was the first indication the host got as to you having a problem. When you returned to the property the host tried to accommodate you as best she could and you proceeded then to state that you could not get any odour, and was offered by the host to change your mind and stay. It is obvious that you wanted to stay in a Town rather than the countryside. Property Owner
