LORRHA, COUNTY TIPPERARY

Portumna 5.5 miles; Galway City 50.5 miles.

The historical, pretty village of Lorrha is situated in the north of County Tipperary and is set on an ancient 6th century monastic site. Lorrha offers two pubs and a playground and is steeped in history with its famous monastery and its high crosses dating back to its founder St Ruadhan's time. Visitors to Lorrha love getting lost in time while at this lovely village, which includes an 11th century church, the Dominican Priory, a 15th century Augustinian Abbey, and The Friars Lough, famed for its legend of the monster beneath the water. Just five minutes’ drive away is the busy town of Portumna with a good selection of shops and pubs, along with Portumna Castle and Gardens. Watersports can be enjoyed at any of the stops along the Lough Derg drive, including Terryglass, Portumna, Scariff and Mountshannon, fishing is in abundance on the River Shannon and visitors also have the choice of four great golf courses close by. The larger towns of Nenagh and Birr are within 30 minutes drive, the latter being home to the famed Birr Castle and people come from all over the country to Birr Vintage Week during the summer. The famous Rock of Cashel Castle and Galway City are both only an hours’ drive away. Galway City is famed worldwide for its charming cobbled streets, fantastic shopping and nightlife, traditional Irish Music and, of course, the Salthill Promenade.
