Outside the cottage there is an enclosed back garden and a gravel area with furniture where you can relax with a refreshing drink. The surrounding terrain is of lush green countryside with stone wall field boundaries and thorny ditches. The hamlet of Mayo Abbey is a mile away with its pub and shop. Famed as a monastic learning centre since the 6th century, when it attracted students from all over Europe, it is now a tranquil village. A short journey will take you to the bustling town of Castlebar and on to Westport, an oasis on the Wild Atlantic Way. It is here that majestic Croagh Patrick stands proudly over Clew Bay. Savour its many shops, pubs and restaurants. Take a day trip to Foxford, straddling the mighty River Moy, famous for its salmon fishery, and home to Foxford Woollen Mills. Experience the wonderful knitted crafts in its extensive shop and enjoy a meal in the the adjacent café. Motor north to the Museum of Country Life at Turloughmore and immerse yourself in the daily lives of past generations. The city of Galway is a leisurely one hour’s drive away. The cottage is only 40 minutes' drive from the sacred Knock Shrine at Knock which is a holy place for pilgrimage, which also extends a welcome hand to the general visitor.
