“We have just returned from Southern Ireland where we rented a cottage from you at Rathmore Country House in Ashford Co Wicklow and the service we received from you and your staff was impeccable and cannot be criticised, in fact it can only be praised, especially the two young men
However, there were many faults which ruined our holiday.”
To begin, when we arrived we went to reception and there was nobody there so we rang the number on the door which responded that the number was unavailable. So I called the number I had on my mobile and someone answered and asked us if we were booked in! Why did they not know we were arriving? When I had a text from the owner, Belinda Cullins she said she would be on site when we arrived. We finally were met and taken to our apartment but the lady didn’t know how to open the door as it was a tilt and open, so we managed it. When we booked our accommodation you recommended we take out insurance in case of breakages, which we did. You told us we would be charged for any breakages, so we made notes of everything that was wrong when we first arrived and this list numbered over 20. Some of the things were petty but some things were broken. Also in the information we received from you we were told the first €5 was included in the rent each day, this was not the case and it was only the first €5 on the first day.
But the worst thing was the noise from the apartment above us. There was a woman and her three children upstairs and the racket was insufferable and incessant from 6.30am to 7.30am, by which time we were fully awake. Then from about 5pm until 9pm until the children went to bed, but at the weekend it continued until 11.15pm. We went up to ask her to be quiet and when I knocked on the door a young girl answered and when I asked for her mother she opened the bedroom door at the far end of the apartment and went in and her mother came out in a nighty. While I waited another child of about 3 was jumping off a settee onto the wooden floor then climbing back on the sofa to repeat the process. The littlest who was about 2 was pushing a metal legged high stool around the wooden floor and it scraped and the racket was appalling. The mother said she would see to it, but nothing improved. The next night Joan the cleaner was about and we asked her to come in and she heard the noise for herself. The following night the woman from upstairs was outside on the phone and the kids upstairs were making a terrible noise. I went out and invited her in to listen, of course they went quiet or quieter at this point. The surrounding apartments seemed to be permanent lets and we found out later that there was a severe shortage of accommodation within Ireland and that was why they had been let to locals.
This place was advertised as offering peace and privacy, which it certainly was not. Two nights before we left Belinda, the owner, came to see us and offered to move us to another accommodation but having suffered 8 nights we weren’t prepared to pack up and move for two. Belinda had been on holiday when we arrived and when she came back her uncle had died so she was tied up with that, but it didn’t help us subdue the racket from upstairs.
Added to this disruption we faced cancelled ferries both ways and had to visit Holyhead and Dublin port to rectify this. We received texts saying our sailings may be cancelled due to bad weather. On our way out it was not cancelled but on the way back it was and despite the ferry saying it was due to weather we believe it was that there were two sailing which where only half full so they decided to put everyone on the same sailing, thus saving costs. The weather was calm both in Dublin, across the Irish Sea and at Holyhead and we made good time. On the way to the earlier ferry we had changed to Hogan’s Cottages rang to ask if we had heard the ferry had changed, which was a bit late as we were already on our way to the 8.05am sailing.
Overall the holiday, whilst serving to bring back happy memories from when we had visited Ireland before, was a washout.
Our treatment by Sykes Cottages was excellent just a shame the holiday left a lot to be desired.
