The spectacular expanse of mountains and lakes known as the Killarney National Park covers 26,000 acres to the south and west of Killarney town in lovely County Kerry. Visitors to our County Kerry cottages will jump at the chance to spend a day here, and there is so much on offer. Ireland's highest mountain range, McGillycuddy's Reeks, lie within the park, and its slopes sweep down to the shores of the beautiful Killarney lakes. There are wonderful walking trails through shaded woodland dells and past waterfalls, or if Kerry cottage guests want to take it really easy, then take a ride in one of the well-known jarveys or horse-drawn carriages available for hire.
Muckross House and Gardens are the famous centre-piece to the National Park, and anyone on a Ireland vacation cottage holiday will relish the chance to stroll in the extensive gardens, which run down to the lakes edge. Tours of the house can be taken, and there are craft shops, a restaurant and a collection of traditional farms on site, which offer a fascinating insight into rural life of times gone by.
Whether spending a week in a County Kerry cottage or simply passing through on a day trip from one of the neighbouring counties, the Killarney National Park is a wonderful opportunity to get close to nature amid beautiful surroundings, and you may well find one day is not enough to explore.
